Filed under: iPhone , iPod touch , App Review The clever 2006 card game Knights of Charlemagne has made it to the iPhone and iPod touch as a simple little number placing app [$1.99, iTunes link ]. We don’t mean simple in that it’s easy to beat or uninteresting. We mean that the game is clearly designed and plays quickly. While the beginner level (the Squire) is really only worth playing through once or twice with the tutorial minstrel on to learn the rules, getting to and beating the AI at Knight, and then the King level (which is supposed to be Charlemagne himself) is a good challenge and provides plenty of game for two bucks. There’s a whole lot of math and bluffing in the game. That is something which is better experienced in person and using real cards, but board games on the iPhone are their own experience. So, when you want some light brain-burning with a medieval theme, look no further than this simple app. Read on to find out more. Filed under: Multimedia , Odds and ends , iPhone , iPod touch , App Review I’ve always liked Slate Magazine on the web. It’s sometimes sassy and irreverent, but always interesting — an eclectic mix of politics, culture and tech news. Now, Slate has come to the iPhone in a US$1.99 app that features all the articles from the site, as well as the blog posts, staff tweets and streaming video from the Slate podcasts. Once content is downloaded you can read it off-line, which is a worthwhile feature. Access to Slate on the web is free, and you can read Slate from any mobile browser by going to mobile.slate.com. So why the charge for the iPhone app? Slate says it cost something to develop it, and it gives you a much richer experience in a portable form. I can’t argue with that, but I can argue with the ads that appear absolutely everywhere. Even the splash screen popped up with an ad. I think that’s a bit much after I’ve paid for the app, but I’m beginning to see a lot of this in other apps as well. I do like the app a lot, and it is a better experience for me than reading Slate stories in Safari on the iPhone. I even prefer the app to reading the site on my desktop or laptop. I just think the constant intrusive ads are a turn-off that will keep some people from pulling the trigger on what is an otherwise laudable effort. Slate works on any iPhone or iPod touch with OS 3.0 or greater. I expect we’ll see an iPad version as well. Full disclosure: In the dim, distant past I worked at the Washington Post Company, which owns Slate. Take a gander at some screen shots below: Gallery: Slate for iPhone screen shots Slate comes to the iPhone, along with a lot of advertising originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 09 Mar 2010 16:30:00 EST. Filed under: Odds and ends , Airport , iPhone , iPod touch The makers of the TomTom app for the iPhone have let us know that they’ve submitted an updated version that adds real-time traffic information, Google local search, and even some secret features the company isn’t talking about yet. The TomTom app was eagerly sought out last year, but of late has fallen a bit behind market leader Navigon . This new release, with real-time info and Google local, will give both apps rough feature parity. The current TomTom app is on sale for U.S. $49.99 at the app store (U.S. maps only) and it includes a “free update to the new version as soon as its available.” That would indicate that some or all of the new features will be an extra charge for current owners. Version 1.3 will be available as soon as it passes through the App Store vetting process. Filed under: Accessories , Humor , iPhone , iPod touch That headline is probably a bit of an overstatement, since this is probably the only iPhone stand made out of cutlery. ForkedUpArt of North Salt Lake, Utah, is actually selling two different stands. ForkHead , who you see standing at attention at your right, and SpoonHead , ForkHead’s smarter brother. Sold through our favorite iPhone accessory store, Etsy.com , the ForkedUpArt iPhone stands can be customized if you want, and according to the artist, “I’m making these guys as fast as I can.” How much will one of these unique items put you back? About US$20, plus shipping. That’s less expensive than some of the fancy-schmancy stands you can buy through more traditional sources, and let’s face it — these stands are really cool. Filed under: iPhone , App Store , iPod touch Just in time for the Academy Awards on Sunday, March 7th (when you should be participating in the TUAW Talkcast…), E! Entertainment has relaunched the popular E! Online mobile app . When we say popular, we mean it — there are apparently over 1.4 million iPhone and Android users who enjoy their celebrity and entertainment news direct from the free app. The new version of the app includes the “E! Talk Box,” which gives users a chance to record their own video commentary for possible inclusion on E! and/or E! Online . While your chances of getting your video snippet on the air are probably slim, at least you can finally talk back to the TV. Part of the app update includes a new carousel navigation menu above the news section (see photo at right) that highlights coverage during the award season with special videos and a “Live from the Red Carpet” section. You no longer need to tear yourself away from your iPhone or iPod touch to watch E! shows. The app, for better or for worse, lets you watch complete episodes of such favorites as Keeping Up with the Kardashians and The Soup . (Update: According to E!, you can download the episodes from within the app, but you actually watch them in iTunes). If all you want is the scoop on your favorite celebs, you can also create a custom celeb list and get the news delivered directly to your iPhone or iPod touch. The free app is available in the iTunes Store now. Be sure to let TUAW know if your iPhone submission to the E! Talk Box gets on the air. Live from the Red Carpet: E! Filed under: Enterprise , Hardware , Odds and ends , iPhone , iPod touch , iPad Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search from Nuance Communications were definite crowd-pleasers, so today the company is announcing specialized medical versions of the apps for physicians and medical professionals. The first app is Dragon Medical Mobile Dictation . It is designed to allow clinicians to dictate patient notes, emails and text messages instead of typing them on a mobile device. The idea is to let medical professionals dictate and capture information in real time with a smartphone, without having to return to a desktop or laptop computer. The product is expected to be available before the end of the year. Nuance is also announcing Dragon Medical Mobile Search , a variation of Dragon Search that will allow medical staff to search a variety of medical websites completely by voice using an iPhone. The app is expected to be released by April 30. Finally, Nuance is unveiling Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder , a voice capture app that will allow clinicians to conduct on-the-go dictation using a smartphone. Once the sound is recorded, the file is forwarded through Nuance’s background speech recognition technology and into a transcription where a high quality draft is created, then returned for review and sign off. The Dragon Medical Recorder is due before the end of this year. Nuance estimates that by the end of next year, 81% of physicians will be using smartphones. More interesting is that the company research shows the iPhone breaking away from the pack of other smartphones to be the preferred device in the medical enterprise. According to the Nuance research, the Blackberry is still the leading smartphone among physicians, but the iPhone growth is explosive and almost doubled in use by physicians between 2008 and 2009. In a July survey of Medical Students it was found that 45% owned an iPhone or an iPod touch. Of those who did not own a smartphone, 60% planned to buy an iPhone or iPod touch within a year. That has to be good news for Apple, and I would expect Steve Jobs and colleagues to continue to push the iPhone into the enterprise in the coming months. For Nuance Communications, it’s a further endorsement of Apple products. Earlier this month Nuance bought MacSpeech , the company that produces MacSpeech Dictate. The application uses the Dragon speech recognition engine. Nuance also provided the voice recognition that powers the popular Siri app for the iPhone, that lets users do searches with natural language queries. Peter Durlach, the Senior V.P. of marketing and Strategy for Nuance, told me the company is also taking a close look at the Apple iPad for use by medical professionals. The company will see if the form factor works for doctors and nurses, and Durlach says he expects the iPad to be an important part of future Nuance solutions. Filed under: Gaming , Software , Apple , iPhone , App Store , iPod touch Good news for fans of good games: the terrific DS courtroom simulator (which, trust me, sounds much less fun than it actually is) Phoenix Wright, Ace Attorney is coming to the iPhone , and Slide to Play has posted some hands-on video. The game takes the two DS screens and stacks them on top of each other rather than converting the game into a landscape version, so it’s basically a straight port of the DS game. It’d be interesting to see a more iPhone-specific version of the game (maybe something that uses the camera or the accelerometer to show off evidence in the courtroom), but we’ll take just the port, too — if you haven’t played any of the Phoenix Wright games but enjoy a good adventure yarn, you’re in for a treat. The game should be out “soon.” Hexen II is on its way to the iPhone as well, and Touch Arcade has a few screens and video of that one . I was much more of a Quake fan, but Hexen, with its medieval setting and RPG elements placed in the same game engine, had its share of followers back in the day, too. Unfortunately, Vimov doesn’t yet have the rights to Hexen II — they’re just working with an open-sourced version of the engine. To actually release the data on the App Store, they’ll need to make a deal with Activision, so we’ll have to wait and see if that can happen before you can start hacking and slashing through the world of the Serpent Riders again. Filed under: Gaming , Software , Developer , iPhone , App Store , iPod touch PopCap has released some sales information on their latest iPhone game, Plants vs. Zombies , and it’s a runaway hit: the game has sold over 300,000 copies in just the nine days it’s been out on the App Store, which means the company has garnered over $1 million in sales already. Very impressive — first, we had an app make a million total , then a company was making a million a month , and now PopCap has done the same in just over a week. So what’s their secret? It’s a high quality game, first of all, and PopCap has a reputation for making those already. Second, the game itself had a fairly high profile even before release, since it was extremely successful on the PC as well. And finally, you have to think that the price figures in as well — I thought the game would sell for PopCap’s usual $5, but they actually sold it two dollars less than that. They’d probably have still made a lot of money, but I don’t know if they’d be talking about 300,000 sales at a price just two dollars higher. Then again, the game is already available for free online , so maybe the quality and PopCap’s profile played a bigger part than the price did (they also trumpet the fact that Bejeweled 2 is also one of the top five grossing apps on the App Store). Congrats to PopCap on all their success. Oh, and our free time called, too. It surrenders. Filed under: Apple , iPhone , App Store , SDK , iPod touch After all of the kerfuffle earlier this week about Apple shutting down racy apps in the App Store, it appears that the company might be creating a special place for all of that suggestive and sexy content. We received a tip and a screenshot (seen above) from a developer who pointed out the new “Explicit” category in the tool used to submit apps into the store. While TUAW has not yet been able to confirm this, The new category could be the first sign that Apple may provide enhanced parental controls or even a separate “adult” App Store. This would not only maintain the revenue stream from these apps for both Apple and the developers, but would stifle comments that Apple is being too strict with providers of adult content. We will update this story as it develops. Update: The new category is corroborated by Cult of Mac and MacRumors as well. Filed under: Odds and ends , iPhone , App Store , iPod touch On the list of “I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes” apps, this one takes the cake… and chokes on it. The free I am choking app could save your life if you are choking on food and can’t speak. If you have your iPhone in hand and can avoid panicking, then you can launch the app, wave your iPhone frantically in front of someone who is nearby, and hope that they can a) read English, and b) follow the instructions in the app to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on you. Actually, this is no joking matter — about 3,000 adults die every year from choking on food. Of course, you’ll need to have the app downloaded and installed on your iPhone or iPod touch before this happens. As fellow TUAW blogger Erica Sadun noted, “by the time you download and install, you could be dead.” Apparently the developers, Thought Shaping LLC , don’t want to get sued by the relatives of people who are not saved by the app, as they’ve added the disclaimer “Note that this is for novelty use only!” at the bottom of the app description in the iTunes Store. Want to see the app in action? Check out a public service announcement video made by the folks at iPhoneSavior.com by clicking the Read More link below. Continue reading Are you choking?
