Justin.tv Had E3, But UStream Has The Jonas Brothers

Earlier in the week, we shared some rather impressive numbers from Justin.tv from the company’s live video streaming of E3 . Today, however, we share some numbers from UStream regarding the massive success of last week’s one hour webcast with pop trio The Jonas Brothers. In all 974,000 people watched the webcast at some point. That compares to the 1.6 million viewers that Justin.tv was able to draw to E3 on Monday, which was an all day event. Which leads us to ponder: what’s suddenly driving such huge crowds to live video? Beyond the interesting content and celebrity, it’s the incredibly viral nature of the tools. As we’ve noted previously, both of these live video tools now integrate their chat features with Facebook and Twitter, meaning participating in the chat effectively updates your Facebook status or sends out a tweet too. In the case of The Jonas Brothers, that generated 1.5 million posts to user’s feeds, which in turn lead to hundreds of thousands of other users joining in once they saw what was happening. UStream also reports that there were more than 40,000 tweets for the event. It’s difficult to say how much staying power these features have – the way they are designed, it could be easy for users to start overwhelming their friends with messages and getting complaints – but for now, they are driving some massive numbers for high profile live video events. Meanwhile, The Jonas Brothers take to UStream via their Facebook app for their “final” webcast tonight at 8pm ET.
