Things change. If you thought that Apple will never allow an on-demand music streaming application in the US ( Spotify , which was approved a couple of weeks ago, works only in Europe), you were wrong, because Real Networks’ Rhapsody does exactly that, and it has just gone live in the App Store . The application is free to download, but to be able to stream music you’ll need a $15 per month Rhapsody To Go subscription. The music quality is, unfortunately, not too high: 64kbps, even over WiFi; on the other hand, at least you won’t be spending too much data traffic. The catalog on offer, however, is extensive, as you can choose between 8 million tracks (iTunes, for comparison, holds over 10 million tracks in its store). As far as features go, the app includes playlists, channels and top lists. The application syncs with the web version of Rhapsody, and it also integrates with iTunes (which gives us some hints as to why Apple had approved the app), enabling you to purchase music without leaving the app. Best of all: if you’re not quite ready to take the plunge, you can try it out the 7-day free trial.
