Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green. This week Inhabitat brought you a surge of renewable energy news as groundbreaking projects supercharged every corner of the world. London officially crowned the first skyscraper with built-in wind turbines while Sicily generated solar power in the dead of night with the world’s first solar plant that stores energy using molten salt . And speaking of solar power, China is heating things up with the largest building-integrated photovoltaic plant on the planet . In transportation news, we scored an exclusive interview with auto manufacturer Edison2, who is currently coming up aces with three ultra-efficient vehicles in the final stages of the Progressive Auto X Prize — and we watched high-tech aviation soar to new heights as Airbus unveiled its vision for a fuel-efficient aircraft of the future . Finally, we were wowed by the world’s first biomass consuming robot , which actually eats, excretes, and can run for a whole week unsupervised. If you’re thinking “I can do that” then we encourage you to try - why not start training with this exercise-inducing treadmill desk ? Don’t forget to wear your spiffy glow-in-the-dark performance wear ; your co-workers will love it. Here’s a robot learning to flip pancakes. It’s hard not to laugh, watching this dumb bot flub flip after flip. But we won’t be laughing when we’re running for our lives, slowed down by a stomach full of fluffy pancakes. More »

When residents of Shizuoka were trying to figure out how to top last summer’s Gundam statue , they did the obvious. Look for the new, lightsaber version this summer (OK, technically ” beam saber “—but we know the truth). [ Kotaku ] More »

Life became duller ever since FedEx took away our last annoying little robot , so we got our hands on a new but less chatty plastic companion — say hi to Robonica ’s Roboni-i programmable robot. Since its last Engadget appearance we’ve seen a drastic price drop from the original $299.95 to $159.95 at Hammacher Schlemmer, but the robot is no less awesome — those unique wheels alone deliver plenty of coolness already, not to mention the bunch of peculiar accessories in the box for games and even interaction with other fellow Roboni-is. Read on to find out if this bot’s a keeper. Disney’s newest animatronic eye should give you the williest willies ever. It uses electromagnets for the most realistic eyes motions yet, despite having no actual moving parts, meaning it can be creepier for longer before wearing out. [ Disney via BoingBong ]

You’re never gonna buy an iTunes LP , but you wanna know what’s inside those flashy 600MB attempts to revive albums, right? Spoiler, from Jay Robinson : A bunch of HTML and PNG files in a custom archive format. But no DRM. You can actually dive right in yourself by changing the .ITLP extension to .ZIP, giving you full access to the files inside. What’s interesting is that it does all of the animation using HTML 4.01, CSS and JavaScript—no Flash. Also “missing” is DRM—your iTunes account is just recorded inside the file. Oh, and probably the best tip? Check out the custom visualizers inside of each album, they’re great. Lots more tidbits, like accidental leftover files, here: [ Jay Robinson via DF ]

Over at Healthcare Robotics, they’re still working on Project Clickable World , but what they’ve got so far is amazing. A green laser pointer serves as a “mouse” to select real world objects and command a robot to interact with them. The researchers explain how this clickable world interface is supposed to work: In our object fetching application there are initially virtual buttons surrounding objects within the environment. If the user illuminates an object (”clicks it”) the robot moves to the object, grasps it, and lifts it up. Once the robot has an object in its hand, a separate set of virtual buttons get mapped onto the world. At this point, clicking near a person tells the robot to deliver the object to the person. Clicking on a tabletop tells the robot to place the object on the table. While clicking on the floor tells the robot to move to the selected location. Check out the video below to see this process in action and head over to the Healthcare Robotics page for more info and clips. [ Vimeo via HCR ]

Usually when we freak out about the coming of killer robots , nobody bothers to disagree with our histrionics, which is in itself a comforting sign that we’re overreacting. On the other hand, if the makers of a chainsaw-wielding robot take the time to point out that it is not a flesh-eating harbinger of the apocalypse, well… Cyclone Power and Robotic Technologies, the companies behind the weaponized EATR drone , have put together a joint press release to comfort us all that the biomass-harvesting machine will be exclusively vegetarian, meaning it would only feed on “renewable plant matter” and not the bodies littering the battlefield. There’s no reason not to believe them, though you should remember that in the eyes of a robot, humans are renewable too. [Via Wired ] Filed under: Robots EATR robots claim to be vegetarian… sure originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Jul 2009 06:09:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds .
